Transport in York information:

Do you have difficulty getting to St Paul’s on a Thursday morning? Perhaps you don’t want to ask for help from a friend or family member as they already help you out with other things.

There are several organizations in York it’s worth speaking to:

York Wheels on 01904 630080 or 01904 726791. They are run by volunteers and charge a small fee to cover costs, this can be as little as £2 or up to £15 depending on how far you need to go.

There is an answer phone service outside office hours – leave your name and telephone number and they will call you back. You can also e-mail  enquiries@york-wheels.org.uk

Borrowing a car: Ever thought life would be easier if you didn't own a car - but still had the use of one whenever you wanted? Sounds like the best of both worlds? A new initiative in York gives you just that – WhizzGo pay by the hour cars.

How it works: Cars are booked through the internet or by phone, weeks ahead or up to 30 seconds before a vehicle is needed. Once a booking is completed, you simply walk to a car, unlock it (using a personal smart card and PIN) and drive away. Cars are located in reserved parking spaces within the city centre close to public transport links. Costs Using a WhizzGo car costs no more than £4.95 per hour. This cost includes fully comprehensive insurance, 30 free miles a day and 24 hour breakdown assistance. For a whole day's use the cost is reduced to £35 – that’s £1.46 per hour for 24 hours.There are also special rates for businesses of all sizes and regular users can save up to 15%. Evening and weekend rates are significantly reduced (e.g. £20 overnight from 7pm to 7am).

Registering: To sign up to WhizzGo is simple. Register by calling 0870 44 66 000 or online on the WhizzGo website. http://www.whizzgo.co.uk/ There is no annual or monthly membership charge, just a one-off £25 membership fee and a fully refundable insurance deposit of £125. Once you are a member, you can pick up a car at any time of the day or night.
