Explorers

Explorers are thinking outside the box and are going to be getting involved in loads of community activities.

In order for you to get a good idea of exactly what explorers is all about we interviewed one of the leaders, Bekah, about the club to get the inside info on what goes on.

What is Explorers and who is it for?

Explorers is a club and it’s for children aged 8 – 11

Where and when do you meet?

We meet on Wednesday nights in the crypt, starting at 6.15pm and it finishes at 7.30pm every week. But not in the holidays.

What kind of things do you do?

Explorers is meant to be a fun club where you get to do loads of different activities and games and competitions and stuff and you get to learn stories from the Bible.

Tell us what happens on a normal night then…

Well the children arrive from 6.15pm and they sign in, we have a little register on the door. George one of our leaders is there as they sign in and he’s in charge of subs, which are 30p. (Unless it’s your first time and then it’s free!)

Then at half past six we have workshops. There’s usually a choice of two. In the summer one is always outside, the other may or may not be depending on the activity. The children are told the week before what the activities will be and they can sign up for the next week but there’s always plenty of space for everyone to do what they want.

After the workshops the children come back together for a drink and a short talk or story. The leaders take it in turns to do a talk and they’re always different. Sometimes if might be a drama, or a funny story, or a video or a magic trick even!

After the talk we finish off with a game or two for everyone while people get their tuck and then it’s time to go home!

What are some of these activities you talked about then?

We’ve got some great activities this term in our workshops, check out these:

·         Rounders

·        Tag rugby

·        Baking

·        Knitting

·        Capture the Flag

·        Tie dying

·        Football

·        Percussion workshop
And that's just a few

And what about the stories?
This term we are hearing about some of the miracles performed by the very first Christians. So far we’ve heard about how Peter healed a man who couldn’t walk.

And you mentioned tuck before?

Yep. The tuck shop is a place where you can buy a bag of little sweets. There’s penny sweets and some that cost up to 10p sometimes, fizzy belts, and fish sweets and friendship rings. Sometimes there are little bags of Skittles and Freddo chocolate. It’s always exciting to see the new ones when it’s re-stocked.

What about the team?

We have quite a big team. There's Helena, the Youth and Children's worker, Ben Brady, Dave Cockerill, George Gardiner, Bekah Lee and Hannah Lee. We also have Kath Flatley who helps us every week and a couple of people doing their Duke of Edinburgh who help, called Josh and Steve.
